25 CA Bloggers Crash the CDP

This is a great project. Granted, with numbers like these, it won't be a whole-scale takeover, but it will be part of the more gradual silent revolution to simultaneously reform Democratic parties around the country, and to bring in much needed new blood--Chris. Cross-posted from Calitics

The California progressive blogosphere is growing and maturing. One of the more concrete examples is the ongoing organizing around the CDP delegate elections this weekend. Much of December was spent encouraging people to run and now a large number of bloggers have filed their papers and are publicly campaigning for election

Our efforts are building on those of DFA after the 2004 election. A large number of reform oriented activists were elected as delegates. They will now be joined, hopefully, by a number of bloggers. From there they can influence the decisions of the CDP and work their way up in the party structure.

Below the fold is a list of all of the bloggers running, the district and their real names as available and a link to their statements. The chart may be incomplete. There are 20 21 people running across the state, which is a fantastic start! If I have missed anyone please let me know.

Update [2007-1-11 0:31:48 by juls]: I added Erik Love of the Courage Campaign to the list. 21 aah aah aah (/count)

Update [2007-1-11 3:4:39 by juls]: Two more changes. I took off Eden because he got an appointment as delegate and thus will be withdrawing his name to open up another slot. So we already have one in there. On that note Randy Bayne and his wife Marcy are already serving as delegates down in AD 10. Randy is the Amador Co. Central Committee Vice-Chair. h/t to blogswarm for letting me know about Ellen who is a new addition to the list.

Update [2007-1-11 3:26:19 by juls]: Last one before I go to bed. These come from the comments on the Calitics post. I have added EDN and Chris to the list. Also, Steve Maviglio just lobbied me, so he is going up too. Even though he is a professional hack, he still qualifies as a blogger and is one of the good guys. I will be personally voting for him this weekend in the 9th.

Update [2007-1-11 13:37:37 by juls]: Couple of changes. Predictors real name is up there. gjones has pulled out, so she is off the list. Two new additions Kai and Jen. That makes 25 fabulous bloggers.

Three important links for people.
  1. List of all candidates running by AD.
  2. Meeting locations (This Sat or Sun)
  3. Progressive slates

Re: 21 CA Bloggers Crash the CDP (3.00 / 2)

Most is going on offline and there is a delicate balance to make sure we don't throw out a great delegate because somebody else has a computer and talks a lot.

It is far from perfect, there are two different sites and lots on email.

But I like the fact we are trying lots of different ways, hopefully the postmortem will shine light on what our good friends in Texas and other states might want to think about.

Re: 21 CA Bloggers Crash the CDP (3.00 / 1)

The CDP will also have lots of great coverage from outside the gates, much like the 2005 western regional caucus meeting during the DNC Chair race (where I think MyDD had 14 diarists "correspondents").

I think we owe the fact that bloggers are credentialed to CDP events to Bob Mulholland. Even further back in 2003, he let Jerome and Markos cover the convention with the famous "What I want to know" speech by Howard Dean. They were the first and in the 2004 DNC convention the bloggers were prime time.

Since then, the CDP has been willing to let bloggers into events and that is really cool. Thanks CDP!

Re: 21 CA Bloggers Crash the CDP (3.00 / 1)

Thanks for the shout out, Juls!

Just so folks know, JeremyDThompson at Calitics is Reelpolitk over here at MyDD.

I know there's a meeting for the Progressive Slate folks of the 43rd tomorrow night, but I have tickets to the Kings/Sharks hockey game down at Staples Center...

I'll have camera in hand to capture what goes down at the 43rd AD meeting, and will provide a link in a diary here early next week.

No problem. I am happy to put any and all bloggers up on the list. Just let me know who to add.

This isn't a blogger, when did he ever blog before he needed to push his DLC platform?

Re: 21 CA Bloggers Crash the CDP (none / 0)

What I've liked most is the nice comments that went back and forth when I said positive things about Governor Dean's 2003 convention speech, and how - like a light switch - I started to suck ass because I worked on two campaigns (out of MANY) that were managed by Garry South.

Life is just so, so simple.  Isn't it?

Re: 21 CA Bloggers Crash the CDP (3.00 / 1)

thanks, juls! hopefully on Sunday, we can bring a win.

if any of you know someone in the Silverlake/Los Feliz/Burbank/Glendale area of Los Angeles, please pass on the following details of our election:

Sunday, Jan. 14
IATSE Local 80
2520 W. Olive Ave., Burbank

costs $5 to vote (arggh)

I'm running on the progressive slate, and I promise to fight within the party for:

1. Opposition to escalation in Iraq and to set a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq

2. Universal Healthcare

3. Clean Money - Publicly finded elections

4. Poverty Elimination - working to level the playing field, not make it more difficult to get on the field; and to make sure LA has not just a minimum wage but a living wage.

5. Investigations and Oversight of the administration

Re: 24 CA Bloggers Crash the CDP (none / 0)

Thanks everyone for the information, but this is all very confusing to me still. I'm still not quite sure what the procedure for doing all this is, do you just show up at the place with $5 and fill out a ballot or what? How do I even tell which I'm supposed to vote in, are these "AD"s broken down by county or can I just go to whichever one is closest to me or what?

Thanks.

Re: 24 CA Bloggers Crash the CDP (none / 0)

mcc -

You can find out which Assembly District you live in using THIS LOCATOR FROM THE CDP.

I'm not sure exactly how the balloting will work, or if it is consistent from one AD to the next.

Re: 24 CA Bloggers Crash the CDP (none / 0)

I wouldn't recommend this as when I search my address or zip code, no elected officials match my search. Also, I saw no listing of AD districts.

I know that http://80ad.pbwiki.com/Assembly%20Distri ct%2080 has maps of all the districts, but it isn't searchable and the info isn't complete.  Not sure where the maps were drawn from.

OK, my mistake. go specifically to: this part of the CDP site for AD info and/or here for a handy overview map that oddly (conveniently?) links to Republicans...

Re: 24 CA Bloggers Crash the CDP (3.00 / 1)

Has everyone on this list posted a diary on Calitics about it? I'm sure they haven't, but they certainly should, today if possible, and we can wrap them all up into a single tag or something?  Maybe too late in the game, dunno.

Re: 24 CA Bloggers Crash the CDP (3.00 / 1)

Hey Lucas, Yes, I did post at Calitics. I also sent juls an e-mail asking him if he thought I should issue a Diary for myself on AD-12 on Kos. I meant to add on that, that I thought his issuing a completed Diary like this on Kos might be a better idea, if he is willing to do so. Therefore, there won't be a barrage of Diaries on basically the same subject.

Re: 24 CA Bloggers Crash the CDP (3.00 / 1)

I know you did and I know that a bunch of the above mentioned have, but I also know it isn't everybody. If we could get a brief platform announcement/personal statement from everybody over there, it would be great.  I'm gonna try to tag all of the existing ones up later today, but in the meantime I hope we can fill out the list.

Andrew Lachman - 42nd AD E-Board (3.00 / 2)

My name is Andrew Lachman and I am running for E-Board in the 42nd but not delegate.   I had my own blog (Call to America) but had to shut it down when I got a job working with a campaign, but I also did a bit of blogging on the CDP website as well when I ran the West LA office, which worked closely with PDLA members and SoCal Grassroots members.

I'm supported by some members of the Progressive Slate (two other members of the slate are running for e-board as well) and some members of the Progressive Action Coalition slate as well.

I am not running against Hekebolos, we are on different ballots (E-Board is on a different ballot than delegate).

Re: Andrew Lachman - 42nd AD E-Board (none / 0)

I have no idea what's going on with the-eboard candidates.  I didn't even metion the e-board race when I wrote diaries on the subject, because I honestly arrived too late to the game to understand the nuances of whatever is going on.

Haven't crashed it yet (none / 0)

But we definitely have our shoulders to the gate :-)

Still have to make it through the caucus on Sunday.

This is what I prepared for a candidate statement.

I represent youth and idealism. I'm 28 and I refuse to take "it can't be done" or "it isn't politically possible" for an answer. I'm technically savvy, email and "blogging" are part of my native language. From being part of various online communities an running the Jill Martinez for Congress web site I know what has and is being done with new technology, and what is yet possible.

I believe in universal health care and I am particularly enthusiastic about election reform issues.

I want to go to the state convention to bring these new techniques, resolve to find the best solutions possible, and to learn more about the workings of politics and governance - experience that I hope will lead to a still more effective progressive democratic movement in the future.

OC Bloggers Crashing the CDP (3.00 / 1)

Sorry to give you the dated info on gjones...
I didn't know that she had dropped out in AD 73...
However, I'm glad that she'll be appointed by the Orange County Central Committee.

Still, I'm running in AD 69 along with two other great progressives from DFA. I'm hoping that we can unseat some old-school folks who never get ANYTHING done, except for squabbling over decades-old pie fights! I just hope that our local caucus doesn't turn as ugly as I'm fearing it may be.

Oh, and I can't forget Chris Prevatt! He's one of the bloggers at The Liberal OC, although he now lives on the other side of "The Orange Curtain", in Long Beach. He has been a fearless advocate for LGBT rights in Orange County, and I know he will make a great delegate!

So, I guess we're starting to "crash the gates" in Orange County. Though I didn't mention them earlier, we also have progressive (non-blogging) allies in the other ADs. Hopefully, we can all make a difference this year. How could I have ever guessed that this would become so big?

: )

No way, no how, no McCain! :-)

if someone runs in 33, I can get my father to vote (none / 0)

he is 86 and blind, but he would find a way to do it.  he was depressed for 6 years, but now is hopeful and wants to do something to make a difference
